Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was raised within Long Beach California. DuVernay had a close relationship with her Aunt Denise She encouraged DuVernay to be creative and drawn by art. DuVernay worked as a night nurse in order to give her aunt the time she needed during the day for the love of art, literature and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that art could serve to engage people. DuVernay grew up with parents who were conscious of her social status and taught her how she could use the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was a summer resident of Lowndes County Alabama, where her father was born and was raised. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay would use the summers she spent there to inspire her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay attended University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay started producing for the broadcast industry while she was still in college. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being given the task of watching the residence and scrutinizing the rubbish of one jurors. Her disappointment was evident in her journalism tasks and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay was brought in right after college, as the junior publicist for one of the smaller studios. In 1999, she founded her own private company for public relations, dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched a number of promotion and lifestyle networks which include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
